Other Social Sites

foursquare.com

I had never heard of this site and it's actually incredibly convenient! It finds where you are and then you can select something to search for either coffee, food, etc. I think it would come in handy because people comment on each of the locations such as "too slow at lunch time" so you know to avoid that place at lunch.

43things.com

This is amazing! Just by reading through the goals of other people it made me smile and think of things that I would like to accomplish. It's great because some of them are small goals and would be easy to accomplish but others could be very challenging but you have a huge group to help you out.

webmd.com

Interesting facts about your health. I had heard about this site before and know someone who uses it pretty religiously with her kids when they are sick or acting strange! It's very interactive too which keeps people interested.

Plankinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planking_(fad)

This "lying down game" as they call it seems kind of crazy. They do refer to it as a "fad". As I was reading stories on Planking, I found that there was a death and in some cases, injuries. If you plank, plank safely! I find it funny too though.

the-sphere.com

This looks like a social media site for people who think they're better then others! Who said you had to be accepted into social media? Definitely a status thing, I would be surprised if people would want to go through all the trouble just to be judged by a bunch of people you don't know about whether you're worthy or not!

getpocket.com

This is a neat tool if you're a frequent web user and visit a lot of sites all the time. I can see this being practical for people who work in the media. Even for the average person it would be pretty neat if you don't want to forget something, or if you don't have time to read something in that moment.

flickr.com

Neat site. Although I think it resembles a lot of the photo sharing sites these days such as "instagram" and "facebook" or "twitter". I can see where the allure is. They advertise that it's very easy to use and then give you a little bit of a taste without signing up.

Eons.com

Since this is was permanently shut down, I read up on it on wikipedia. This was meant to be a social media site for an older generation. As facebook is geared towards everyone, my assumption is that there weren't enough hits on this and they couldn't compete.

deviantart.com

I used to be a part of this site and would get lost in it for hours. So many artist on here, very photograph oriented and I was very big into photography in highschool. Not so much anymore :(. It's well designed and geared towards what you're looking for. Search anything!

socialvibe.com

This site must make a great deal of money, for businesses who are looking for prime advertising, this is the place to find it. They are doing all the work and creative aspect of advertising for you! In return, you reep the benefits. Great idea.

“Privacy is dead, and social media holds the smoking gun.” - Pete Cashmore, Mashable

Hi again to all!

I'm hoping my subject line caught your attention. To everyone who had read my previous blog, my choice on the above quote is no surprise to anyone!

I find this quote clever as it refers to privacy as something that can be shot with a gun. The metaphor behind this, as well as the meaning, is what attracted me to this particular quote. When you read it through, you discover that this person, Pete Cashmore, believes that social media is the reason that we are unable to keep our individual lives private. I don’t believe he means that there is no way to keep a private life but now more than ever, with internet and all kinds of different social media outlets on the rise, you can have your entire life laid out for anyone and everyone to see.

I know that most of you social media buffs would argue that you can choose who gets to see your life but you also forget that anyone with a computer and enough knowledge can obtain any type of information they want that has been posted on the internet.

That being said, I agree but also disagree with Pete Cashmore’s observation.

On the agreeable side…the world seems to forget a simple phone call or face to face meeting goes a long way versus receiving personal information about someone through a social media outlet. Privacy doesn’t necessarily mean keeping everything from everyone but choosing who gets to see what and when. On a social network, you post something and everyone sees all at the same time. Of course, I’m sure there are benefits to it, but also a down side. I know that I would be personally insulted if I found out something such as… my brother getting a new job and he decides to post it on Facebook before telling me! I am not on Facebook but let’s say I was, I would read this and think, “geez, my brother sure doesn’t consider me more important than his friend from elementary school that he’s spoken to once since”

To agree further with this quote… Think of celebrities and how their lives have been impacted that much more since social media outbreak. Yes, it is very true that celebrities were never meant to have any privacy. That is part of being famous. Although, now-a-days, it’s a lot more than just paparazzi and news paper articles. You have everyone in the world that is able to reach out to any celebrity via social media and discover all kinds of things about their lives, whether true or false. The “demand” behind being a celebrity has increased significantly due to being in the public eye. They are expected to be a part of every social media network and keep all their fans up to date on their lives.

Maybe if Justin Bieber were to be a celebrity 50 years ago, he wouldn’t have felt so harassed and acted out the way he did in this video I have featured below.

To disagree with the quote, I will say that you do have control over what you post and what you display for the world to see. If you choose to have your life on there, then that’s a choice you’ve made and you’ve accepted any consequences that follow that. With respect to disagreeing, I believe that social media is not the one to hold the smoking gun but you yourself hold the gun.

Anything posted on the internet becomes accessible to anyone, despite blocks or security features, there’s always a way around it. Also, it never actually disappears even if deleted; it floats around somewhere in cyberspace.

For example, I used to have a Facebook account in 2006. I really enjoyed connecting with everyone. I posted pictures of myself and my boyfriend at the time. A couple of years later, Facebook really started to take off and I couldn’t keep up with all the people and the posts. I found I was wasting a lot of my time on there. My boyfriend and I (that was in all those pictures) split up. I choose that to be the perfect opportunity to leave Facebook and wipe the slate clean. Over Christmas break this year (4 years later), I received a message from my sister saying “Welcome to the world of Facebook! I didn’t know you were back together with your ex?”

I panicked when I saw that my own Facebook account was re-activated! It had all my old pictures and everything I had ever posted. Turns out someone in India re-activated my account. This just heightened my fear of social media access that much more.  Please be warned about posting on the internet!!

All in all, you can control your privacy but social media makes it that much harder. The smoking gun can point in all kinds of different direction, if you want it away from your privacy then keep your private information away from it!

Social Media EH?

Good day fellow bloggers and welcome to my very first blog! Those are definitely words I never thought I would be typing.

As we have only just met, I should let you know that I don't have a Facebook or Twitter account but I did recently open a Linked In account to which I log onto maybe once a week... if I think about it. I enjoy the occasional music video on YouTube. Do I sound a little abnormal yet? Most people my age would say yes. So how is it possible for a 25 year old to live such an outrageously social media deficient life you ask? Well, I really believe it all depends on who you are! I am definitely a social butterfly but I prefer to text, talk on the phone or go out with my friends. There's something that makes me feel very uneasy about having your entire life available for others to view at the click of a mouse.

I read an interesting article today about Canadians and social media and the internet. We are nearly DOUBLE the world wide usage. To be honest, I am a little surprised! I thought the U.S. would have had us beaten in that department. I've thought about why it is that we spend so much time in front of a digital screen. The first thing I thought is that Canada is a pretty quiet place when you think about the dramatics and the wars going on in other countries. We as Canadians want to stay up to date with everything in the world. We want news and we want it now! By we I mean a good chunk of Canadians. I definitely fall under the average because I find that 90% of news is bad news. The top stories don't interest me, they actually just make me feel terrible! So I stick with my music on YouTube and am perfectly happy.

In this article, they also mentioned the growing demographic are people over the age of 55! This kind of made ME feel old because they're spending more time on social media then I ever cared to invest. But a video related to this article made me starts to see it from a different perspective. It was just more convenient for them to look for things, recipes, reading the newspaper, staying in touch with family and even having your groceries delivered right to your door. This is great for people over the age of 55 but I wonder is this why the internet and social media have exploded so much in Canada? Is it just more convenient to "see" friends online instead of going to visit? Has the discovery of social media made us lazy? Some could argue that when you have family half way across the world, this allows for you to stay connected. Some could argue that their lives are just too busy to visit everyone they would like, or even pick up the phone to have a conversation. Yet we as Canadians are spending all this time on Facebook and Twitter.
Something to think about!

Until we meet again...
